welcome to mediated mush, the ramblings of a university professor who assigns blogging exercises to her students. it seems only fair that I join them in the blogosphere.
this term (winter 09) we are exploring citizen/social/participatory media and/in the public sphere. so far, it has been a stellar class (and yes, they will be reading this). it is fun but also challenging to teach about citizen media. students generally already know a lot about these forms and how they work. even if they are unfamiliar with things like blogging, twitter or the mechanics of wikipedia editing, they are emersed in a world where the social effects of these media are hashed out in an awesome mix of hope and cynicism. my job is less to tell them about things (information is always googable) and more to enter into a conversation (sometimes spread across multiple media) with them. this blog is part of that conversation
